How to Pay for Drug Rehab with Cigna Healthcare Insurance

Paying for addiction treatment is one of the largest barriers for people getting the help they need to overcome drug or alcohol addiction. Fortunately, most major insurance plans cover some level of substance abuse treatment.

For people with Cigna Healthcare insurance, finding a Cigna drug rehab can substantially reduce the costs of getting effective, evidence-based care.

Does Cigna Healthcare Insurance Cover Substance Abuse Treatment?

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, most major insurance companies are required to cover addiction treatment. But the level of coverage varies significantly between insurers and health insurance plans.

Cigna insurance will typically cover some or all of the costs of addiction treatment, but the details of your plan will determine how much treatment is covered, what kind of treatment is covered, and what your out-of-pocket costs will be. Determining your level of Cigna rehab coverage is often the first step to receiving effective substance abuse treatment.

There are several variables to consider when looking to enroll in a Cigna drug rehab, and you may need to call your insurance provider to clarify the details of your plan.

How to Pay for Treatment with Cigna Drug Rehab Coverage

Getting Cigna insurance to cover the costs of your drug or alcohol addiction treatment takes a careful investigation of your health insurance details and your personal requirements for substance abuse treatment. For example, most insurance plans will pay for services such as:

  • Drug and alcohol detox
  • Inpatient treatment programs
  • Outpatient programs
  • Medication-assisted treatment

However, Cigna insurance may limit the amount of time you are able to stay enrolled in a substance abuse treatment program. Many insurance providers limit treatment stays to 30 or 60 days, at which point you would have to pay out of pocket to continue receiving addiction treatment.

Check What Types of Treatment Are Covered

While Cigna does cover inpatient treatment in some cases, they only cover it for short-term stays. If you or your loved one need to spend an extended period in a rehab facility to overcome a severe addiction and work on relapse prevention, Cigna may not cover all of your needs. If you are seeking this level of treatment, you should contact Cigna directly to find out the scope of care that is covered in your plan.

Outpatient Services Covered by Cigna Substance Abuse Treatment Plans

The first step of finding a Cigna drug rehab is contacting your health insurance provider to determine what types of treatment are covered. Before calling Cigna, it can be beneficial to understand the different levels of treatment and what types of services are offered.

Medical Detox

A medical detox treatment facility is designed to help people overcome the physical symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal. These facilities are staffed by medical professionals who can deliver medications and treatments that alleviate withdrawal symptoms, such as:

  • Shakes
  • Sweats
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Life-threatening seizures

Since drug and alcohol detox is often life-threatening, many insurance providers consider it medically necessary and will provide full coverage for this service.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment is the most intensive form of behavioral therapy for substance use disorders. During inpatient treatment, clients live on-site at a substance use disorder treatment facility and receive intensive behavioral therapies and counseling. This can help people learn the skills needed to achieve and maintain their sobriety.

Inpatient treatment can last between a few weeks and several months, but insurance providers typically have a limit for how long they will cover inpatient care.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment shares all the same evidence-based treatment methods offered at an inpatient facility, but clients continue living in their own homes or in supportive recovery housing. There are multiple levels of outpatient treatment, which differ in the amount of time spent receiving treatment at a treatment center. In order of most intensive to least, these include:

  1. Partial hospitalization programs
  2. Intensive outpatient programs
  3. Outpatient programs

Cigna healthcare may have specific requirements for what levels of outpatient treatment they will cover.

Cigna Healthcare: Navigating Insurance Coverage for Addiction Treatment

The first step of finding a Cigna drug rehab is contacting your health insurance provider to determine what types of treatment are covered. Before calling Cigna, it can be beneficial to understand the different levels of treatment and what types of services are offered.

In-Network Providers

Cigna Healthcare has specific providers that they consider in-network. In-network providers typically provide more services for your dollar and could be completely covered by your health insurance.

Out-of-Network Providers

Out-of-network providers typically have higher costs associated with attending treatment. An out-of-network Cigna drug rehab may still have a significant portion of the costs covered by insurance, but you may need to pay a higher percentage of the total price out of pocket.

What You Have to Pay for Drug Rehab with Cigna Healthcare

Even if you choose an in-network provider, there may still be costs associated with attending substance abuse treatment in your health insurance plan. These costs typically break down into three elements of your health insurance policies: deductibles, coinsurance, and copays.

Your health insurance deductible is the amount that you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage picks up the bill. If your deductible is $1,000, for instance, you will need to pay that amount before insurance takes up the cost of substance abuse treatment.

Your deductible refers to any medical treatment occurring within the year, however. So if you have already spent $500 at a doctor’s office before attending treatment, you would only have $500 left to pay before your insurance kicks in.

After you’ve met your deductible, you may still need to pay a percentage of the total cost as a coinsurance payment. If you have a 10% coinsurance rate, you would be expected to pay 10% of the cost of treatment after your deductible has been met. For example, if you received a $200 medical bill after meeting your deductible, you would be expected to pay $20 in coinsurance.

Copayments (or copays) are another fee that you may be expected to pay after meeting your deductible. Typically, these are specific amounts listed in your insurance benefits, such as paying $15 for a doctor’s visit or $10 toward picking up a prescription.

Out-of-Pocket Max

Finally, your out-of-pocket maximum is the total amount that you would have to pay, including deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. If you have an out-of-pocket maximum of $4,000 and a deductible of $1,000, you would pay only coinsurance and copayments after paying your first $1,000 and nothing at all after paying another $3,000 in coinsurance and copayments.
